Music Monday: Mayer Hawthorne

Has any state had it worse lately than Michigan? Specifically, the city of Detroit? With the American auto industry having to take tax dollars, a soaring crime rate and an abysmal football team, the state has seen its share of tough times. But through all the turmoil there is something that the people of this state can be proud of: Mayer Hawthorne.

Although he is currently based in L.A., Andrew Mayer Cohen was born and raised in Michigan, drawing heavily upon the sounds of his childhood. Hawthorne's music is a throwback to the Soul and Motown music that originated in neighboring Detroit. I'll keep the introduction short as I know next to nothing about either of these musical genres and wouldn't do them justice by pretending that I did. But it was Hawthorne's modern-renditions of these classics that drew me to his music.

The first video is an introduction and live-cover of M.I.A.'s "Paper Planes" done by the Guardian.

The next video is Hawthorne's first single of his 2008 album: A Strange Arrangement, "Just Ain't Gonna Work Out."

Happy Monday!
